Nest Hello vs. Ring Elite — Differences

Nest Hello

  • Difference #1: Power Options & Installation – Nest Hello and Ring Elite support network bandwidth of 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

A good WiFi connection is crucial in ensuring that your smart doorbell can have enough power to send notifications and alerts almost instantly.

So before purchasing your brand new smart doorbell, be sure to double-check your WiFi connection, and if you’re in doubt, be sure to check out some WiFi extenders, such as the Ring Chime Pro.

The main difference between Nest Hello and Ring Elite is that Ring Elite runs on Power over Ethernet (PoE). And the difference between WiFi and PoE lies in the connection.

Power over Ethernet provides better connection when it comes to running your doorbell. An Ethernet cable will both power and supply Internet to your Ring Elite doorbell. You’ll also never have to worry about having to charge any batteries, or losing your internet connection. Of course you’ll need a Power over Ethernet switch to make it work (your standard Ethernet cable from your router won’t work.) For more information on PoE and the benefits it has over standard Internet connection check out our take What is Power Over Ethernet?

While Nest Hello can be hardwired into an existing doorbell kit and is compatible with 16-24 VAC doorbell transformers.

In terms of installation, both Nest Hello and Ring Elite do require a bit of know-how when it comes to wiring. Yet if you have the experience and a general understanding, then the setup process should be fairly straightforward.

  • Difference #2: Field of View – In terms of field of view, Ring Elite comes out ahead with its 160 degrees horizontal and 90 vertical vs. Nest Hello’s 160 degrees diagonal.

Better coverage is a crucial feature for any smart doorbell. As it’s what will help you identify the package thief or vandal.

  • Difference #3: Pre-Recorder Responses – Not always you’ll be able to get to your door straight away, and luckily Nest Hello offers a solution for that.

By being able to choose from 3 pre-recorded messages, such as “No one can come to the door,” ‘You can leave it.” and “We’ll be right there”, you can easily respond remotely without having to answer the door.

Unfortunately, with Nest Hello you don’t have the option to create your own personalized message like with Zmodo Greet HD, but automated messages are still a great option to have for your smart doorbell.

Ring Elite doesn’t have this function available.

  • Difference #4: Subscription Plan – Both smart doorbells offer a variety of subscription plans to choose from, so let’s take a look at both.

With Nest, you’ll have the option of going for the Nest Aware, where you can choose from 3 plans to suit your preferences.

The 5-day plan comes to 5 USD per month, the 10-day costs 10 USD per month, and the 30-day is 30 USD per month. If you wish, you also have the option of paying annually, which comes to be a little cheaper in the long run. All 3 plans also offer cloud storage based on their coinciding days, eg: 5 days, 10 and 30, which is not that much when compared to Ring’s subscription plan, which we’ll take a look at soon.

All 3 plans offer intelligent alerts, clips and time-lapses, and (CVR).

The CVR (continuous video recording) is an important feature for your home security because it allows you to monitor your front door 24/7. While Ring Elite has no such technology, their subscription plans offer other great benefits to choose from!

Similarly to Nest Hello, you can also choose from 3 plans. Free, Protect Basic and Protect Plus, which offer both monthly and annual rates.

With the Free plan, you’ll receive push notifications to your smart device whenever motion is detected, or doorbell is pressed. As well as custom motion detection, and live video on demand.

Protect Basic comes to 3 USD per month. This plan includes the ability to access videos of every activity event for up to 60 days. While the Protect Plus Plan at 10 USD per month, which covers all of the Ring devices in your home. As well as all the features offered with the Protect Basic Plan, you’ll also have the benefit of Ring Alarm professional monitoring, and even up to 10% off any Ring Products.

  • Difference #5: Advanced Motion Detection – While both Ring Elite and Nest Hello offer the motion detection feature, there are a couple of differences when it comes to its effectiveness.

Nest Hello offers personal alerts and facial recognition, which leads to greater accuracy when sending alerts. If you decide to go for the Nest Aware subscription, you’ll also have access to the motion zones, that allows you to individually set specific areas within your doorbells view cam, that should be monitored more closely.

While Ring does offer personal alerts for free as well as its advanced motion detection technology, it falls short when it comes to more advanced software such as facial recognition.

Yet if that’s not something you’re looking for, then Ring Elite with its more affordable subscription plans may seem like the better option. Plus, with Ring Elite you’ll still be able to set motion zones if needed.

  • Difference #6: Size & Style – In terms of measurements, Nest Hello is slightly larger than Ring Elite with dimensions of 5.1”’ x 2.5” x 1.1” vs. 4.7” x 2.75” x 0.43”.

Ring Elite also offers a more traditional doorbell like appearance, while Nest provides a more modern twist.

In terms of color options, Ring Elite comes with more options to choose from. It includes 4 interchangeable faceplates of Satin Nickel, Pearl White, Venetian, and Satin Black, to suit your home.

While Nest Hello comes in a Black & White finish, you have a wide range of colorful skins to choose from.

Nest Hello vs. Ring Elite — Our Thoughts

Ring Doorbell Elite

When it comes to Nest Hello vs. Ring Elite, we have to admit that Ring Elite’s main selling point is the Power over Ethernet connection.

As it’s important that your doorbell remains powered and online 24/7 focusing on your home security. While Nest Hello does boast a strong connection, it’s not quite the same as PoE.

However, Nest Hello offers other competitive features such as CVR and facial recognition. Although, there have been some negative reports when it comes to Nest’s response time. It’s been noted that it takes about 10 seconds to send a notification to your phone when it detects motion. This is a major disadvantage from a security standpoint when time is of the essence.

It’s also been mentioned that Nest Hello has a pretty long cooldown between notifications for each detected motion, which can sometimes be up to 30 minutes. As there will be situations where there are going to be multiple motion events within that time period.

With that being said, while Nest Hello does offer some unique technology that we haven’t seen in other brands, it seems as Ring Elite is the more reliable option for your home.
