Ecobee3 Review: The Good
Room sensors: The Ecobee3 brings a whole new dimension to energy efficiency and control with its room sensors. The Ecobee3 room sensors let you tailor your needs based on the amount of people in the room. If nobody is in the room, focus energy elsewhere and save your wallet. And based on this feature alone, we’d recommend purchasing the Ecobee3. The downside? The thermostat/sensor package comes only one sensor; you’ll have to buy Ecobee3 room sensor packs seperately.
Monthly Reports: If you’re a data person, or one who loves to budget, this feature is right up your alley. With monthly reports on the energy you use, you can come up with ways to decrease your consumption and and reduce the amount of money spent. Ecobee’s monthly reports help you bring energy efficiency to your home.
Easy, self-installation: Ecobee makes replacing your current thermostat pretty easy. They’ve got step-by-step instructions and videos that’ll help you move that Ecobee3 thermostat from the box to your wall in no time.
Control settings from Android or iOS: No more getting up and setting the thermostat by hand, that’s old school. With the Ecobee3 thermostat, you’ve entered into the world of smart home owners and can control your homes from your smartphone. The Ecobee app looks great, is easy to use, and has a bunch of features (we won’t go into here) that help you customize your home to your liking.
Saves you money: With the room sensors and the customization offered, changes in your energy consumption will (most likely) be drastic. The Ecobee3 gives homeowners all the tools to both monitor and improve energy usage, resulting in a fatter wallet.
Accessory connection: The Ecobee3’s ability to connect to home accessories lets you easily manage things like ventilators, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers. Ecobee’s website has more information as to what it can connect to specifically.
3 year warranty: With a warranty like this, it’s really hard to say no to giving it a try. Three years is a long time to have coverage on a product, and really speaks to the confidence Ecobee has in their line of thermostats. If there’s any problem whatsoever, just send it back and they’ll sort it out.
Ecobee3 Review: The Bad
Price: We debated whether or not we should put this in the bad section. While upfront, it’s a little costly, it saves you money in the long run. The Ecobee3 gives homeowners the tools necessary to save money, but that means making sure it’s used it to its full capabilities. Homeowners that customize and evaluate how they use their system will help you in the long run. If you’re into evaluating and fixing how you consume energy, this will save you money. And we’d guess that most who purchase the Ecobee3 are conscious, or want to be conscious, of the energy they use.
App run: Because of the reliance on the app, any types of crashes or errors that happen will keep you from fully using your system. We doubt there will be many problems with this, but we’d like to throw that out there in the event that something happens with the app for even a brief duration; we doubt that the Ecobee developers would leave an outstanding problem so this is more a precautionary “bad” list item.
Internet Connection: In the off-chance that you’re without an internet connection, you won’t be able to change the settings while away from home. The upside to this is that if you have everything set up from the get-go, you won’t need to worry about this issue. As we make it further down this list of bads, they all seem like off-chance events that would make this product bad. So, we’ll stop here.
Our Review of Ecobee3 | Final Decision
Overall, we like it. With its room sensors and smart occupancy feature, the Ecobee3 is changing the way smart homes manage heating and cooling. We think that the Ecobee3 thermostat is a solid purchase and highly recommend it, especially if you’re looking to lower your energy bill and improve your energy usage.
